Totally. Other travelers gave us bad reviews about Vietnam before we went there, but you have to see it for yourself otherwise it just doesn’t feel right to judge a place because of what other people have said. And I wouldn’t discourage anyone from visiting Vietnam. I wouldn’t go there for a nice holiday on the beach, but if you really want to see a different culture then it’s a great place to go. Also, I think anyone’s whose family was in Vietnam, like your Dad, would definitely want to go to see what that’s all about.

Nick and I were discussing your Vietnam experience last night. He wondered if your less than stellar experience has curtailed my interest in visiting someday. My answer was no, and you totally hit the nail on the head from our discussion in your post. He and I talked a lot last night about how different the culture is in Vietnam and how that shapes a people’s priorities and values, and that I may not share those with the people of Vietnam, it makes me no less curious about their land and their way of life.
